December is a time when things slow down a bit, but a perfect opportunity for you to be ready for your job search in 2019!
- Get your resume in order. Find it, proof it. Make sure there are no typographical errors. No, not just a quick skim. Actually review and make sure it is ready for the changing climate. Look at the format. Make sure it is within keeping of the industry you are in. Summarize where appropriate. If you have been consulting, perhaps you can shorten the list by not including all of the companies. Try to eliminate multiple pages. Speak with others in your industry.
- References are needed. Do not wait until someone, (Recruiter) asks for them. Speak with the people you are planning to give. Make sure they all agree that you have been a wonderful employee and that they will not be surprised by a call about you. Let your references know that you are beginning a job search in the coming year, so that they can let you know if they are available or possibly going out of town.
- Use the vacation time you have accrued. With 2019, laws are changing and some of your time may be able to be carried over, while others are not. Perhaps, the company is changing their policies. If you have unused time available in early 2019, you can use for interviewing.
- Do you need a refresher course in a particular software? Do you have plans to take other courses online or begin a credentialed program? It may be the right time to at least begin so that when you interview, you can say you have.
PLAN TO RECHARGE YOUR BATTERIES. The holidays take up alot of your time and energy. This is a good time to prepare for your job search. Make sure that you have interviewing outfits and professional copies of your resume and references.
